Southeast Mexico.. Official Intentions Above-National Interests
In regards to the policies and requirements established by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) for third-world nations (also known as emergent and/or underdeveloped), it is very important to review, monitor and when necessary, reject the criteria, guidelines and environmental standards that go against individual nations’ precepts, sovereignty and independence.
This is in response to an article published by Reforma newspaper December 2011: “Buscan Instaurar Reservas de Agua”. Based on it, it is necessary that the directors at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the National Water Commission (CNA) clearly respond to a one question: Is the purpose of the agreement between the Mexican Federal Government and WWF to reserve the invaluable hydropower resources in the Southeast region for supporting environmental policies and goals of such organization even though they’re in detriment of Mexico’s development?… Without exception, Mexico’s interests must always take priority over foreign ambition, excuses or demands.
Generally, recommendations made by the WWF are directed to third-world nations with the intention of preserving valuable resources to be considered by industrialized countries, especially, since first-world nations intensively use the wealth of their land to execute and operate multiple basic infrastructure projects, which are not subject to environmental restrictions.
If Mexico was to build new and modern multi-purpose projects, it would need to meet certain requirements and comply with counterproductive and inconsistent environmental constraints most of the time. Obviously, that would only translate to stopping, suspending or making projects much more expensive. As a result, there would be more political, economic and social problems such as poverty, unemployment, insecurity, violence, and drug trafficking.
For example, the Federal Government’s “Integral Water Plan for Tabasco” is comprised by limited, wasteful and unhelpful proposals. Perhaps its final objective is to abandon the coastal plains of Tabasco (which are constantly flooded) and, with that, agree to the proposals made by foreign organizations such as the WWF, Green Peace, and so on. In contrast, the Southeast Development Complex, (part of México Tercer Milenio (www.mexicotm.com), along with its 27 major infrastructure projects is a visionary, long-reach proposal, that, aside from generating substantial amount of employment and wealth for all Mexicans, it would allow such strategic region to responsibly and rationally take advantage of natural resources to reinvigorate and diversify Mexico’s progress.
So, at the earliest convenience and all due respect, I extent an invitation to environmentalists and federal and southeastern state officials to debate about this matter. I would personally present the Southeast Development Complex to SEMARNAT, CNA and WWF for their consideration.
